Purebred Hackney Horses are well proportioned, with head and neck raised, expressing the alert and active character of the breed. The head has a straight or slightly convex profile. The clear and intelligent eyes are set wide apart. The ears are well formed and active. The throat should be fine with no restriction to air passage when bridling. Hackney Horses have well-sprung ribs and obliquely sloping shoulders. The legs should have clean flat bone, with long forearms and short cannon bones. The legs should be upright without any outward or inward turning. The hooves of a Hackney are well rounded and open in the heels with concave soles. And, in the front the hooves should form an angle of about 50 degrees. The coat color can be chestnut, brown, black, and bay with white stockings.
The Hackney Horse is shown single, pair, four in hand, obstacle, or under saddle. Hackney Ponies are shown in four divisions: the Hackney Pony (Cob Tail), Harness Pony (Long Tail), Roadster Pony, and Pleasure Pony.
As for the gait, four-beat walk is expected when shown in hand. In show harness classes, high action is of great importance. The movements should be lofty and well rounded with no tendency to brush the elbows. The front feet must be placed squarely on the ground. Excessive speed at the trot isn't desirable in Hackney Horses; the aim is to give a well-balanced performance, with picture of poise and elegance.
